The Ouessant sheep is named after a small island off the coast of Brittany, the island Ouessant. The raw climate and the scanty nutrition probably have influenced the size of these animals.

The Ouessant sheep is very tiny; it is one of the smallest sheep of the world. The ewes have a height of max. 46 centimetres and a weight of about 15 kg. The rams have a height of max. 49 centimetres and a weight of about 20 kg.

The Ouessant sheep has three colours: black, brown and white. The wool of the Ouessant sheep is long with a thick fleece. The ewes usually drop one lamb and birthproblems hardly occur. Ouessant sheep are quiet, sober animals which make no high demands on nutrition and care.

The dexter is a quite and sober animal with a friendly character, which feels comfortable in a cold as well as in a warm climate. The weight of the cows ranges between 250 and 350 kilograms, the weight of the bulls between 400 and 500 kilograms.

The dexters produce milk as well as beef, but are mostly kept for their small size and their friendly character.
